FADDY EATING PLANS THAT CLAIM SUCCESS

The Atkins Diet

THE most successful of all fad diets cuts out carbohydrates so your body begins to burn fat instead.

The diet is a good way of losing weight quickly but has been criticised for being high in fat. The excessive protein can also lead to kidney problems.

But many people swear by it, even if the weight loss isn't sustainable.

Celebrity fans include Renee Zellweger and and Geri Halliwell.

The GI Diet

GI stands for Glycaemic Index and this diet is based around the effect that different carbohydrates have on your blood sugar levels.

By avoiding high-GI foods your blood sugar levels will be kept steady, rather than rising and falling. This should prevent you craving carbohydrates and overeating.

Kylie Minogue, Kim Cattrall and Jodie Kidd have all tried it but if you want to lose weight, you'll still need to watch your fat and calorie intake.

The Blood Type Diet

The interesting theory behind this diet is that by sticking to a plan designed especially to match our blood types, we can improve our digestion and lose weight.

Foods that are normally outlawed include dairy products, wheat or meat, although the diet is simpler for some blood groups than others.

Some diet experts believe the theory just doesn't work, although Courteney Cox is among its fans.

The South Beach Diet

A-List celebrities such as Nicole Kidman and Oprah Winfrey have been linked to this diet, sending it soaring in popularity.

Rather than banning whole food groups like some diets, it allows carbohydrates with a low GI and mono unsaturated fats such as olive oil. But critics say the side-effects on people who stick to it rigorously are similar to those of the Atkins Diet.

The Food Combining Diet

Food combining is based on the idea that the body finds it difficult to cope with proteins and carbohydrates at the same time.

But rather than banning either of them, the diet works by making sure you eat them at different times. Sophie Dahl and Liz Hurley have been linked to the diet.
